Softwashing vs Power Washing vs Pressure Washing Explained
There is some debate on the difference between soft, pressure, and power washing. It is generally accepted that washing is split into two main categories: pressure washing and soft washing.
Pressure washing involves compressing water to a high PSI pressure to clean with mechanical energy.
Soft washing uses water with less PSI to clean more delicate surfaces and uses bio-friendly detergents to break down dirt and grime.
Power washing is a sub-category of pressure washing and uses the addition of heat to add to the cleaning power and aid in certain applications, such as the removal of grease.
What is GPM and Why is it Important?
GPM measures the flow rate of water, in gallons of water per minute. Higher GPM means more water, lower GPM means less water.
GPM is important because it affects how quickly a surface can be rinsed clean after using the detergent and time is money.
Soft Washing Applications
Due to the lower pressure and higher GPM relative to PSI, soft washing is perfect for soft or delicate surfaces:
Siding: Wood Panel, Cedar Shake, Stucco & Coquina
Exteriors: Screens, Screened Enclosures, Lanais & Decks
Roofs: Asphalt Shingles, Cedar Shingles
Softwashing
- GPM higher relative to PSI
- Used for washing siding of homes, cleaning cars, roof, and window washing, applying/rinsing thick detergents
- Most often used in conjunction with detergents, chemical boosters, and surfactants
Pressure/Power Washing
- PSI higher relative to GPM
- Used for blasting off tough stains, gum spots, removing paint, cleaning oil and grease from hard surfaces
- Often uses pressure and water temperature as the main means of removing dirt from surfaces
